Emory Appoints Kenneth Cole to the University Board of Trustees

Kenneth Cole, designer and founder of Kenneth Cole Productions, has been appointed to the Board of Trustees of Emory University, effective June 5, 2003.

Cole, whose term lasts until 2009, is one of nine alumni trustees on the board. The Emory University Board of Trustees consists of 39 members, including 30 term trustees. At this time, all term trustee positions are filled, while two of the nine alumni positions are vacant.

Cole serves as director of creative services and is on the board of directors for American Foundation for AIDS Research (amFAR). Cole's company also is involved in HELP USA, the nation's largest provider of housing and services for the homeless.

In 2001, Cole founded the Kenneth Cole Fellowship Program in Community Building and Social Change at Emory. The program selects a group of undergraduate students each year to participate in intensive academic coursework, a 12-week summer field experience and an annual leadership conference, which this year featured Academy Award-winning actor and director Robert Redford. Cole graduated from Emory in 1976 with a bachelor's degree in political science.

Cole has received numerous awards for his social and political activism, including the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Dom Perignon Award for Humanitarian Leadership, the Funders Concerned About AIDS Humanitarian Leadership Award and the GLAAD New York Media Award for Outstanding Achievement in Advertising.

Cole, 48, is married to Maria Cuomo Cole, daughter of former New York governor Mario Cuomo. They have three children.
