Three Atlanta attorneys whose careers exemplify a commitment to public service will be honored by Emory University School of Law and the Emory Public Interest Committee (EPIC) at the 12th annual EPIC Inspiration Awards Ceremony and Reception at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 12 in the school's Tull Auditorium. Hulett "Bucky" Askew, John Chandler and Aimee Maxwell each will be recognized for their commitment to the legal profession and to the community.

Askew, an Emory Law alumnus, will receive this year's Lifetime Commitment to Public Service Award. The longtime director of the Office of Bar Admissions for the Supreme Court of Georgia, Askew currently serves as the consultant on legal education to the American Bar Association. His award will be presented by Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears, another Emory Law graduate.

Chandler will receive the Outstanding Leadership in the Public Interest Award. A partner at Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP, Chandler will be honored for his work with detainees at Guantanamo Bay. Charles Swift, former Navy lawyer and acting director of Emory Law's International Humanitarian Law Clinic, will present the award.

Maxwell will receive the Unsung Devotion to Those Most in Need Award for her work as executive director of the Georgia Innocence Project, an organization dedicated to helping individuals who have been convicted of crimes they did not commit. Maxwell's award will be presented by Calvin Johnson Jr., the president of the Georgia Innocence Project board of directors and an exoneree who was released after 16 years in prison.

EPIC is a student-run organization that promotes public interest law at Emory. The organization provides grants for students who volunteer in unpaid legal internships during the summer.

Last year, EPIC raised more than $124,000, providing 26 summer grants for rising second- and third-year students volunteering in public sector jobs. Grant recipients worked at a variety of local and national organizations, including the National Wildlife Federation in Washington, the Women's Law Project in Philadelphia, the Institute for Justice in Arlington, Va., Lambda Legal in Atlanta, and the DeKalb County Public Defender's Office in Decatur, Ga.

The Inspiration Awards Ceremony and Reception is EPIC's primary annual fundraiser. Donations are accepted at various levels with a minimum $35 donation to attend the event. For more information about contributing to EPIC or attending the Inspiration Awards, contact Sue McAvoy at 404-727-5503 or smcavoy@law.emory.edu.
