Renowned Filmmaker Mira Nair to Visit Emory

One of Hollywood's most accomplished filmmakers, Mira Nair, will give Emory University's Sheth Endowed Lecture in Indian Studies at 4 p.m. Sunday, March 26, sponosored by the university's Asian Studies Program. The lecture will be followed by a conversation with Fox 5's "Good Day Atlanta" anchor Suchita Vadlamani and Emory film studies professor Matthew Bernstein.

Nair found early success as a documentary filmmaker before moving on to feature films. Her debut feature "Salaam Bombay!" was nominated for an Academy Award, Golden Globe and BAFTA Award for Best Foreign Language Film. It also won the Camera D'Or (for best first feature) and the Prix du Publique (for most popular entry) at the Cannes Film Festival. Since then, with films such as "Mississippi Masala," "Monsoon Wedding," "the Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love," "My Own Country" and "Vanity Fair," Nair has become one of the most respected, acclaimed and award-winning directors of her generation.

Asian studies at Emory introduces students and the community to leading scholarship on Asia through courses, seminars, exhibitions and lectures. The program offers an interdisciplinary major and minor in Asian studies, Asian language courses, internship opportunities and study abroad programs in Asia. Asian studies collaborates on programming with Emory students and community organizations in Atlanta. Events include art exhibits, conferences, discussions, film shows, music and dance recitals, poetry readings, and the annual Sheth Lecture in Indian Studies.
