Religion and Politics Documentary, Panel Scheduled at Emory Jan. 29

"Golden Rule Politics," a timely documentary on politics and religion, will be shown at Emory University at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, followed by a panel discussion. Panelists will include Cynthia Tucker, editorial page editor of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and winner of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for commentary; Jason Carter, Atlanta attorney, co-founder of Democrat Work, and grandson of former President Jimmy Carter; the Rev. Canon John Peterson, canon for global justice and reconciliation at Washington National Cathedral; and Georgia state Sen. Kasim Reed, member of Cascade United Methodist Church.

The program, which is free and open to the public, will be held at Emory's Candler School of Theology, Bishops Hall, Room 311.

"Golden Rule Politics" was produced by the Baptist Center for Ethics to challenge the rhetoric created by the religious right, namely that the acronym GOP stands for "God's Only Party." The documentary argues for the expansion of the Christian moral agenda to include issues such as poverty, health care and the environment. "During this election year, it is extremely important for people of faith to be involved in the electoral process and to realize the responsibilities that go with it," says David Key, director of Baptist studies at Candler. "Hopefully this film will help individuals during this coming year as they make their political decisions."

The public screening is presented by the Baptist Studies Program at Candler and the Baptist Center for Ethics, a group with headquarters in Nashville, Tenn., that provides ethics resources and services to congregations.
