Online Journal Looks at Gulfport Before Hurricane Katrina

Emory University's online journal, "Southern Spaces," provides a poignant video look at Gulfport, Miss., before Hurricane Katrina's battering. Viewers can see and hear poet Natasha Trethewey's presentation of her powerful poem, "Elegy for the Native Guards," which explores the history of African-American home guards during the Civil War, whose graves were literally washed out to sea during Hurricane Camille, the worst storm ever to hit the continental United States.

Also on the site is Trethewey's presentation of "Theories of Time and Space," a poetic look at Gulfport as a unique "Southern Space."
