Human Rights Week Set for Emory March 24-28

Members of the Emory University community and beyond will celebrate Human Rights Week March 24-28. Highlights include a keynote talk by Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin followed by a panel discussion on student activism featuring Congressman John Lewis and former Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee members. The annual event, held since 2001, is designed to bring students and faculty of the university together with members of the broader Atlanta community for education and action.

This year's event honors the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was created under the auspices of the United Nations and outlines the basic rights all humans should have. The week's events will cover several topics, including: the U. S. civil rights movement, international justice and right to asylum, the death penalty, health care access, environmental justice, poverty and homelessness, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights, and labor rights.

The week ends with the Human Rights Festival Friday, March 28, which features an international market with fair-trade crafts, international music and other performances, plus several information booths featuring local and international organizations working on human rights issues.

All events are free and open to the public. For more information, visit The Institute of Human Rights (IHR) at Emory or call 404-727-4609.
