Jane Austen's Novels are Focus of Emory's First 'Great Works Seminar'

Center for Humanistic Inquiry hosts series of free, public seminars

Attention Jane Austen fans: Emory University's Bill and Carol Fox Center for Humanistic Inquiry is sponsoring a five-session seminar on the works of the renowned English novelist beginning Sept. 17. The Jane Austen course, the first in a series of "Great Works Seminars" sponsored by the center, is free and open to the public, although space is limited.

The reading group will be led by Emory history professor Judith A. Miller, a specialist of late 18th-century European cultural history. The seminar is designed for the general reader who has an interest in delving deeper in to Austen's work, Miller says. Participants can expect discussion about the novels as well as an examination of the cultural and historical perspectives of Austen's work. Each of the 15 seminar members will be provided with a copy of "The Complete Novels of Jane Austen" (Penguin Books Ltd., 2007).

The seminar will meet from 7-8:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month for five sessions: Sept. 17, Oct. 15, Nov. 19, Jan. 21 and Feb. 18.
