"Visions and Voices: Portraits and Interviews of Everyday People" is part of Atlanta Celebrates Photography, an annual showcase of photographic arts at multiple locations across metro Atlanta. This exhibit will be at Emory's MARIAL Center from Sept. 20 through Nov. 12, 2004.

The exhibit features photographs and interviews by Dana S Kemp, a native of Newton County, Ga. The photos were taken from 2001 to 2003 in New Orleans, North Carolina and Montana. Kemp says her work aims to capture the authentic essence of people as they go about the activities of their daily lives.

Bradd Shore, professor of anthropology and director of the MARIAL Center, says the exhibit blends nicely with MARIAL's research agenda, which focuses on the everyday routines and rituals evident in American family life.

"Dana Kemp has assembled in words and images compelling portraits of ordinary folks from around the South, giving us a brief glimpse into their personal histories," Shore says. "Here at MARIAL our research has begun to document the life-giving power of ordinary moments of storytelling in family settings."

Kemp studied photography and filmmaking at the University of New Orleans, Loyola University in New Orleans, Showcase School in Atlanta and the Rocky Mountain School of Photography in Missoula, Mont. Her work has appeared in juried exhibitions in New Orleans, North Carolina and Georgia.

She shows her work with Women In Focus, a creative network of female photographers in Atlanta. Kemp also is a member of the Artists Conference Network, a national coaching community of artists. For the past three years, she has helped to plan Atlanta Celebrates Photography, the annual month of events on photography.
