Reformation Day at Emory Focuses on Formation of Youth

Emory University's Candler School of Theology will celebrate Reformation Day on Tuesday, Oct. 26 with a series of lectures and concerts that not only mark the 475th anniversary of Luther's Catechisms, but also explore how today's congregations are engaging and educating children and youth.

Included is a noon lunch presentation on "The Catechism in Contemporary Education and Spirituality" by Bishop Ronald Warren and his wife Neva Warren of the Southeastern Synod, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Following lunch will be an illustrated lecture by Patrick Graham, director of Pitts Theology, and Reformation historian Jonathan Strom on "Uses of Images in Catechetical Instruction."

Afternoon presentations include "Praying as a Christian: Luther's Reformation of Parish Education" by the Rev. Dr. William R. Russell, adjunct faculty member at Candler; "Growing Thriving and Faithful Youth: The Power of Engaged Congregations" by Peter L. Benson, president of Search Institute, a leading research organization promoting the well-being of children and adolescents.

Rounding out Reformation Day is the Kessler Reformation Concert at 8 p.m. in Cannon Chapel with music by university organist Timothy Albrecht, and the University Concert Choir, directed by Eric Nelson.

Reformation Day begins at 9:30 a.m. with a recital/lecture by Albrecht followed by an 11 a.m. chapel service with sermon by the Rev. Ann Svennungsen, president of The Fund for Theological Education.

All sessions are free, but reservations are required for lunch. Continuing education credits are available. For reservations and information contact Karen Esterl at 404-727-6352 or karen.esterl@emory.edu
