Emory Names 2005 MLK Scholars

Eight students from Atlanta Public Schools have been awarded Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarships by Emory University. The merit scholarship is for full tuition, fees, room and board to attend Emory for four years beginning this fall, an approximate four-year value of $162,184.

Four additional students have been awarded Benjamin E. Mays Scholarships for two-thirds tuition for four years at Emory, an approximate four-year value of $81,068.

The King Scholars began in 1969 with an endowment created by gifts from Emory faculty and students at the time of King's death. In September 1988, the program was expanded to provide several outstanding seniors from Atlanta public high schools with Emory College scholarships each year.

There currently are 25 King Scholars enrolled in Emory College.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholars for 2005 are:
Royce Boddie Badger Jr., son of Royce Boddie Badger and Tina Badger Smoak of Powder Springs (30127), a senior at North Atlanta High School;
Chantress Zynette Dixon, daughter of Gary Dixon and Shirley Ann Burke of Atlanta (30315), a senior at North Atlanta High School;
Chuan Fan, daughter of Kendal and Ping Strickland of Atlanta (30318), a senior at North Atlanta High School;
Saji Hargrove Girvan, son of Brian Ramon Girvan of Atlanta (30309), a senior at Henry W. Grady High School;
Daniella Unomma Iloka, daughter Christabel Nneomma Emeruem of Atlanta (30314), a senior at Carver Comprehensive High School;
Arn David St. Cyr II, son of Catherine and Arn David St. Cyr Sr. of Atlanta (30315), a senior at Booker T. Washington High School;
Tye Neasha Tavaras, daughter of Debra Tavaras of Atlanta (31107), a senior at Henry W. Grady High School;
Vinh Tuong Vu, son of Soa Thi Vu of Atlanta (30310), a senior at Booker T. Washington High School.

The Benjamin E. Mays Scholars for 2005 are:
Christina Hardaway, daughter of David and Jennifer Hardaway of Atlanta (30350), a senior at Benjamin E. Mays High School;
Chuandelai Harris, daughter of Anthony and Chuanitra Harris of College Park (30349), a senior at Booker T. Washington High School;
Christy Lee Melton, daughter of Bertha Jean and Tim Lee Melton of Atlanta (30318), a senior at Frederick Douglas High School;
John Dylan Woodliff, son of Joseph and Maria Woodliff of Atlanta (30306), a senior at Henry W. Grady High School.
