Atlanta Students Awarded Martin Luther King Jr. And Benjamin E. Mays Scholarships to Emory

Eight students from Atlanta Public Schools have been awarded Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarships by Emory University. The merit scholarship is for full tuition, fees, room and board to attend Emory for four years beginning this fall, an approximate four-year value of $156,688.

Four additional students have been awarded Benjamin E. Mays Scholarships for two-thirds tuition for four years at Emory, an approximate four-year value of $73,600.

The King Scholars began in 1969 with an endowment created by gifts from Emory faculty and students at the time of King’s death. In September 1988, the program was expanded to provide several outstanding seniors from Atlanta public high schools with Emory College scholarships each year.

There currently are 30 King Scholars enrolled in Emory College.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholars for 2003 are:
Benjamin Corley, son of Danielle and Michael Corley of Atlanta (30307), a senior at Grady High School.
Blake Covington, son of Caren and Richard Covington of Atlanta (30314), a senior at Benjamin E. Mays High School.
Rebecca Jean-Pierre, daughter of Roselaine Jean-Pierre of Atlanta (30315), a senior at Southside Comprehensive High School.
Rachel Kearns, daughter of Jo Ann and Terry Kearns of Atlanta (30306), a senior at Grady High School.
Morgan Marshall, daughter of Karen and Alvin Carter Jr. of Atlanta (30306), a senior at Grady High School.
Alexandra McCrary-Dennis, daughter of Carolyn McCrary and Warren Dennis of Atlanta (30311), a senior at Benjamin E. Mays High School.
Joel Roberts, son of Princess and Stanley Roberts of Atlanta (30315), a senior at South Atlanta High School.
Amber Suitt, daughter of Sharon Suitt of College Park, Ga. (30349), a senior at North Atlanta High School.

The Benjamin E. Mays Scholars for 2003 are:
Nicole Johnson, daughter of Vickie Johnson of Atlanta (30319), a senior at North Atlanta High School.
Sharon Melton, daughter of Bertha and Tim Melton of Atlanta (30318), a senior at Frederick Douglass High School.
Rodrigus Molden, son of Jennifer Goowin of Atlanta (30331), a senior at Benjamin E. Mays High School.
Jessica Riley, daughter of LaTrenka and John Riley of Atlanta (30315), a senior at Grady High School.
