Science Coalition Web Site Highlights Emory Research

From nanotechnology and anti-cancer molecules to AIDS vaccines and sperm-egg chemistry, the wide-ranging research programs within Emory University are currently highlighted on the Web pages of the Science Coalition. The Web site's "Sneak a Peek Inside the Labs" section also features Emory research on Alzheimer's disease, prostate cancer, monogamous voles, phobias, naturally decaffeinated coffee plants, dolphin brain evolution, emerging infectious diseases, "squishy" materials and numerous other research topics.

The Science Coalition is a national organization representing more than 400 member institutions. Its mission is to expand and strengthen the federal government's investment in university-based scientific, medical, engineering and agricultural research. According to the Coalition, "sustained support for research across the entire range of scientific disciplines is the most important step the nation can take to maintain America's position at the forefront of scientific discovery, technological innovation and economic growth in the 21st century."

Emory receives more research funding than any other university in Georgia, including more than $350 million in fiscal year 2004. The university has added more than 3.2 million square feet of space over the past seven years for teaching, research and patient care including, most recently, a neuroscience research building, a pediatrics building, a cancer institute and a mathematics and science center.

The current Science Coalition site describes Emory research in cancer, the neurosciences, infectious diseases and vaccines, chemistry, primate research, public health, nursing, physics, mathematics and anthropology.

Emory University is known for its demanding academics, outstanding undergraduate college of arts and sciences, highly ranked professional schools and state-of-the-art research facilities. For nearly two decades Emory has been named one of the country's top 25 national universities by U.S. News & World Report. In addition to its nine schools, the university encompasses The Carter Center, Yerkes National Primate Research Center and Emory Healthcare, the state's largest and most comprehensive health care system.
