NY Slavery Exhibit Features Expertise of Emory Historian

The New York Historical Society's unprecedented "Slavery in New York" exhibit, which has attracted international attention, was developed with the expertise of Emory University historian Leslie Harris.

The exhibit shows how slavery was not simply the South's "peculiar institution" but was fundamental to the founding of America. "It has left a festering legacy of poverty and marginalization that lingers to this day, as seen in Hurricane Katrina's aftermath," Harris says. Harris is co-editor of the exhibit's companion book, also called "Slavery in New York," and is author of a book that explores the history of slavery in America from the colonial period to the Civil War.
