Emory Welcomes Back Students with a Fun and Intensive First Week

Following is a listing of move-in day and first week activities at Emory University that offer ample opportunities for back-to-school images beginning Saturday, Aug. 24. Emory’s new Clairmont Campus – the most comprehensive residential development in the university’s history – opens the door to a new era of on-campus housing Sunday, Aug. 25 as undergraduate students begin moving in for fall semester. The complex is located on Clairmont Road between N. Druid Hills and N. Decatur roads, adjacent to the VA Hospital.

Another feature this year is a tree planting and poetry reading in honor of the Class of 2006 at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27. In addition to these listed events, there are dinners, cookouts, pizza parties and dessert receptions that will be presented by a variety of different student groups nearly every evening of the first week. Saturday, Aug. 24
8 a.m. RESIDENCE HALLS OPEN
About 1,250 first-year students will move into their residence halls. Fraternity and sorority members run Project Move-in to help students move in to their rooms. There are concentrations of first-year student housing at "the complex" at the corner of Clifton Road and Fishburne Drive (across Fishburne Drive from the Goizueta Business School), and the Turman Center on Haygood Drive (adjacent to Druid Hills High School).

9 a.m. – 2 p.m. BREAKFAST-INFORMATION FAIR-ORIENTATION CHECK-IN
Woodruff P.E. Center, 500 Asbury Circle.
Students can meet representatives from academic departments, student groups, Campus Life and other areas.

1 p.m., 2:45 p.m. and 4 p.m. PARENTING A COLLEGE STUDENT: WHAT TO EXPECT
Harland Cinema, Dobbs Center, 605 Asbury Circle.
A very popular lecture by Emory psychology professor Marshall Duke for parents of first-year students, these sessions always draw standing-room-only crowds.

5:15 – 6:15 p.m. PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS TO PARENTS
Glenn Memorial Auditorium, 1652 N. Decatur Rd.
President William M. Chace will welcome parents to Emory.

10 p.m. – 1 a.m. LATE NIGHT AT WOODPEC REC
George Woodruff P.E. Center, 500 Asbury Circle.
A student event featuring free food, prizes and interactive games in the Woodruff P.E. Center, including a chance to scale the rock climbing wall, play basketball, and enter table-tennis, cycling, rowing and step-machine competitions.

Sunday, Aug. 25
8 a.m. MOVE-IN DAY AT NEW CLAIRMONT CAMPUS
The complex is located on Clairmont Road between N. Druid Hills and N. Decatur roads adjacent to the VA Hospital. Parking is available in the Clairmont Campus Parking Deck, 1945 Starvine Way. The new campus features apartment-style housing for 1,100 junior and senior undergraduates and 500 graduate students, as well as a Student Activities and Academic Center, which officially opens in January.

Monday, Aug. 26
7:30 p.m. HYPNOTIST CHUCK MULLIGAN
Glenn Memorial Auditorium, 1652 N. Decatur Rd., Emory.
Students are treated to an hour of hilarity and amazement by a popular hypnotist.

Tuesday, Aug. 27
9 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. OPENING CONVOCATION
Glenn Memorial Auditorium, 1652 N. Decatur Rd.
A ceremony for first-year students featuring a procession of faculty in their academic regalia and welcome remarks by President Chace, Student Government Association President Chris Richardson and other administrators, followed by a reception on the lawn.

4:15 p.m. CLASS OF 2006 TREE PLANTING AND POETRY READING
Callaway Center, 537 Kilgo Circle, on the Emory quadrangle
First-year students will gather for a tree planting in honor of their class of 2006. Students are encouraged to bring appropriate poetry or prose to read aloud.

Wednesday, Aug. 28
7 p.m. CIRCLE OF UNITY: CULTURAL ARTS PERFORMANCE AND EXHIBIT

Glenn Memorial Auditorium,1652 N. Decatur Rd.
This performance and exhibition spotlights many of Emory’s diverse student organizations.

Thursday, Aug. 29
FIRST DAY OF CLASS
Classes begin at 8:30 a.m. today for undergraduates.

4 – 7 p.m. MADNESS ON McDONOUGH FIELD
McDonough Field, beside the Woodruff P.E. Center, 500 Asbury Circle.
A campus-wide, welcome-back party for all Emory students featuring interactive games and free food.

10 – 11 p.m. RATHSKELLAR COMEDY SHOW
Harland Cinema, Dobbs Center, 605 Asbury Circle.
Students are invited to a performance by Rathskellar, Emory’s student-run comedy improvisation troupe, the oldest collegiate improv troupe in the country.

Friday, Aug. 30
8 p.m. SONGFEST
Woodruff P.E. Center, 500 Asbury Circle.
A highlight of the first week. Class of 2006 students of each residence hall show who has the most spirit through this annual singing competition. Parodies and spoofs of poplar songs have become an hilarious tradition.
