Emory Ph.D. Student Named Miss Georgia 2004

Danica Tisdale, a second-year Ph.D. candidate in English from Emory University, was recently crowned Miss Georgia 2004. Tisdale, the first black Miss Georgia in the 60-year history of the pagaent, competed on the platform of home health and hospice care.

"I'm honored to have that distinction,'' Tisdale told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution when asked how she felt about being the first black Miss Georgia. "For me it's an opportunity to serve as an inspiration to other women of color who might not have seen Miss Georgia as a possibility for them.''

The 24-year-old Ph.D. student plans on taking a year's leave from her program of study to fulfill her duty as Miss Georgia, but will return to Emory next year to complete her degree. She aspires to be an accomplished scholar and professor of English literature.
