U.S. News Ranks Emory's Graduate and Professional Schools

A number of Emory University's graduate schools and programs are ranked among the best in the nation, according to analysis and surveys reported in U.S. News & World Report's 2009 edition of "America's Best Graduate Schools" guide. These rankings will be reported in the newsstand book and the April 7 issue of U.S. News due out on March 31.

Emory's schools of medicine, law and business were the top-ranked schools in Georgia in their respective categories, while Emory's joint Department of Biomedical Engineering with Georgia Tech was ranked 2nd in the nation. The School of Medicine ranked 20th nationally among research-oriented medical schools; Emory Law School ranked 22nd; and Goizueta Business School was 24th.

Lawley, dean of the medical school, said "These national rankings reflect Emory School of Medicine's increasing commitment to research as a cornerstone of our mission and the quality of our faculty, new curriculum and facilities. We are pleased to be recognized as a leader among research-oriented schools of medicine."

"The Ph.D. programs in Biomedical Engineering and in the Graduate Division of the Biological and Biomedical Sciences are excellent examples of interdisciplinary doctoral education," said Lisa A. Tedesco, dean of the Graduate School. "It is gratifying to note that this collaboration is garnering national recognition."

"We're proud of both our program and our faculty," said David Partlett, dean of Emory Law. "This past year, we've focused on building Emory's foundational strengths in law and religion as well as international and comparative law. We've also expanded into new curricular areas through the creation of programs like our Center for Transactional Law and Practice."

Emory's physical therapy program was newly ranked this year as 11th in the nation. Several health-related programs were not surveyed this year, so that Emory's Rollins School of Public Health remains in 7th place nationally and the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing remains 26th, with its nursing midwifery program ranked 8th. Emory's physician assistant program remains 3rd in the nation.

In other categories, Emory's Ph.D. program in African history ranked 9th in the nation; the clinical psychology program ranked 25th.

U.S. News first published a reputation-only graduate school ranking in 1987. The annual America's Best Graduate Schools report began in 1990.
