Emory Officer Given Top Environmental Award

John Wegner, Emory University's campus environmental officer, received the President's Award from the Georgia Urban Forest Council during the organization's annual meeting in November.

The President's Award is one of the council's highest honors, and is given to an individual who makes an outstanding commitment to the council. Wegner was given the award for his numerous contributions to the council and his work at Emory in building a sustainable campus.

"John works tirelessly behind the scenes and seldom receives acknowledgement for his selfless dedication to environmental initiatives both on and off campus. I am very pleased that he received this well-deserved recognition from GUFC," says Robert Hascall, senior associate vice president for facilities management at Emory.

As Emory's campus environmental officer, Wegner works to advance environmental advocacy and sustainability throughout the university. He is the chief environmental consultant for several campus-wide programs, including the university's award-winning green-building and recycling programs, and the creation and continued development of a core walking campus. He also oversees the environmental performance of all university units, including hospitals. Wegner is a senior lecturer in Emory's environmental studies department.

The Georgia Urban Forest Council, established in 1998, is an organization improving communities through urban forestry. As Georgia's only statewide nonprofit organization focused on trees in cities, GUFC has a significant responsibility which is reflected in its mission: to sustain Georgia's green legacy by helping communities grow healthy trees.

Wegner is a resident of Atlanta (30307).
