Poverty and inequality remain persistent problems in the United States. Many hold firm to the belief that responding to poverty is a national responsibility and that there is little that states or communities can do to address poverty on their own. In some cities, colleges and universities have emerged as major catalysts and conveners for launching community-based revitalization initiatives.

For this reason, the Institute is focused on positioning Emory as a destination university for education and capacity building programs designed to foster a new generation of leaders capable of crafting successful cross-sector collaborations to reduce poverty, revitalize neighborhoods, and build equitable communities. For those working on the front lines in American communities, the results of the Institute's efforts will provide guidance for crafting the next generation of comprehensive community initiatives directed at reducing poverty and revitalizing low-income neighborhoods.
