President Wagner Commends Winship Cancer

Monday, April 13, 2009

Dear Emory Colleagues,

We are honored to announce that the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University’s Woodruff Health Sciences Center has earned the prestigious National Cancer Institute Cancer Center Designation. With this distinction, Emory Winship realizes a decades-long goal and joins the ranks of this nation’s elite cancer research and treatment facilities.

NCI designation is a tremendous honor and represents many years of dedication and hard work by faculty and staff throughout Emory University.

Winship’s NCI designation means patients throughout Emory Healthcare and its affiliates, including the Georgia Cancer Center of Excellence at Grady and the Atlanta VA Medical Center, will realize greater access to new clinical trials and technologies that are available only through NCI-designated cancer centers. In addition, the designation will enable Emory to continue to develop research initiatives that will result in new therapies for patients throughout Georgia, the region, and the United States.

Emory’s Winship Cancer Institute serves as a coordinating center for an array of cancer research, treatment and other programs throughout Emory and partnering institutions, among them Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Georgia Tech, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the American Cancer Society.

We wish to thank the many dedicated faculty and staff who have been instrumental in reaching this coveted designation. In addition, we are proud to have Gov. Sonny Perdue on the Emory campus today to help make the announcement.

Sincerely,
