Michael M. E. JohnsDr. Michael M. E. Johns was appointed Chancellor of Emory University on October 1, 2007. Prior to that, Dr. Johns led the health sciences at Emory University from 1996 to 2007.

Dr. Johns received his bachelor's degree from Wayne State University and his medical degree with distinction at the University of Michigan Medical School. From 1977 to 1984 he was a faculty member at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.

The position of chancellor is defined in the University's bylaws as an adviser to the administration and the president appointed by the Board of Trustees. The bylaws do not specify any specific set of administrative duties.

As chancellor, Dr. Johns has taken on several assignments from President Wagner: fund raising for the Emory Advantage financial aid program; representing Emory in matters related to public policy, most especially health care reform; and leading important reviews of how Emory might improve institutional programs in faculty and staff mentoring and succession planning.
