"The Bomb that Healed:
Rabbi Jacob M. Rothschild, Civil Rights and the Temple Bombing of 1958"

Fifty years ago, an explosion ripped through The Temple, home to Atlanta's largest and oldest Jewish congregation. No one was injured; the blast occured before dawn. Five white supremacists were charged with the crime but were never convicted. This exhibition examines why The Temple became a terrorist target and details how the bombing shaped the response of Atlanta Jews to the Civil Rights Movement. At the center of this exhibition is the life and work of Rabbi Jacob M. Rothschild (1911-1973), the leader of The Temple, who preached what was a radical message for white Southern clergy. He demanded his congregation support the "Negro's demand for self-fulfillment."

"Divided We Fall: Americans in the Aftermath"

A documentary film by Sharar Raju and Valarie Kaur
exploring race, religion and what it means to be American in times of national crisis

Driven to action by the murder of a turbaned man in her community, a college student drives across America in the aftermath of 9/11 to discover stories that did not make the evening news. From the still shocked streets of Ground Zero to the desert towns of the American West, Valarie Kaur's inspiring journey uncovers remarkable stories of hate, violence, fear and unspeakable loss -- until she finds the heart of America halfway around the world in the words of a widow.

"Radicalism, Morality, Islam and Authority
in the Kyrgyz Republic"
(with a comparative endnote on Albania)

A presentation by David W. Montgomery,
Postdoctoral Fellow in Religion, Conflict and
Peacebuilding

The active reemergence of religion in post-socialist countries has been accompanied by the fear that increased Islamic practice presents a radical threat to the state. Contrasting the discourse of danger associated with banned Islamic groups in the Kyrgyz Republic to the way that local knowledge shapes practice reveals that everyday life experiences frame understandings of morality, the legitimacy of authority, and the structures that are drawn upon to maintain local order.
