Laura Perry Bates joined the Office of the Vice President and Secretary of the University in April 2008. Laura’s current responsibilities include supporting the activities and initiatives of the Board of Trustees and Board committees. Laura oversees the minutes process; develops committee reports and materials; creates Selected Points of Distinction; and scribes for Full Board and Executive Committee meetings. She is the Committee Coordinator for the Executive Committee and the Public Policy Advisory Group, and helps manage the work of the Honorary Degree Committee. Laura also contributes to research and special projects as needed.
Prior to coming to Emory, Laura worked as manager, international operations, for the nonprofit financial services trade association LOMA, which offers education and training solutions to 1,200 member companies in 80 countries. In that role, she was responsible for program development for conferences, project management for customized education programs, international business development, and member relations.
The daughter of a diplomat, Laura grew up in Washington D.C., Charleston, S.C., and countries including Bulgaria, The Czech Republic, France, and Sweden. She graduated from Agnes Scott College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and French and completed the FLMI financial services designation from LOMA. She worked in Paris, France, for the Mona Bismarck Foundation, which promotes educational and cultural exchange activities, and in Nagano, Japan, as an English teacher on its government-sponsored Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET). She also worked for Delta Air Lines in Atlanta.
