At the commission's latest meeting, held Jan. 22, chair Mark Jordan
asked LGBT members to assemble lists of courses, names of people
and other types of memorabilia to help with several outreach activities.
For instance, Special Collections is in the preliminary stages
of a project to house, catalogue and make accessible rare materials
in LGBT history and literature. Jordan said the idea is for Emory
to increase its holdings in LGBT studies to better support the research
already being done by its students, faculty and staff.
Jordan also said the Office of LGBT Life is working on a project
with Emory students who are gathering oral history about Atlantas
early African American HIV/AIDS leaders.
Jordan said he would be contacting members by e-mail, and they
should pass along information to him. Jordan will forward the information
to the interested parties.
In other commission news, essay prize committee chair Susan Browne
said her committee is in the process of lining up judges for the
essay contest.
Membership and outreach committee co-chair Debbie Isenberg said
her committee hopes to design a draft of the commissions information
brochure by the next meeting. The current version is too text heavy
and must be pared down. One of the brochures primary goals
is to articulate the commissions purpose. David McClurkin,
Isenbergs co-chair, said the commissions purpose will
be self-generating; as the commission becomes more visible, he said,
it will be able to attach itself to more issues and more easily
assist members of Emorys LGBT community.
Pride banquet chair Catherine Shiel passed out menus from the Miller-Ward
Alumni House, site of this years event, and asked members
to choose dishes that appealed to them. Those would be considered
for the final menu.
The price for admission to the event ($5 for students and $10 for
faculty/ staff) was finalized, as well.
The next LGBT meeting will be held March 5 at 5:30 p.m. on the
Oxford campus.
