Conference connects philanthropy, universities: Former Princeton president Harold Shapiro (left), flanked by Emory Vice President for Strategic Development Susan Frost and Olivier Zunz, Commonwealth Professor of History at the University of Virginia, offers his views on “Philanthropy and the Research University,” a conference held on campus April 15–16. In the opening panel discussion with Zunz, Shapiro said that both universities and philanthropic foundations are “institutions of public trust” and are charged with examining the interests they serve. Emory’s Poetry Council sponsored its third Poetry Matters gathering April 17 from noon– 2 p.m. in Beckham Grove, the new fountain area between Candler Library and Emory Hospital. The event invites anyone from the University community (like English’s Ron Schuchard, pictured) to step up to the microphone and recite a favorite or original poem, to the spiritual good of all in attendance. The first event was held last spring and is becoming a lyrical staple for Emory’s community of verse. Photo by Jon Rou.
