African American historian speaks

Author and scholar Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham who worked with John Hope Franklin on a major revision of “From Slavery to Freedom” will give a free, public presentation on the collaboration April 16 at 4 p.m. in the Jones Room, Woodruff Library.

Higginbotham, chairperson of Harvard University’s Department of African and African American Studies, worked with Franklin on a thorough revision of his 1947 survey of African American history.

Provost Earl Lewis will also speak, and David Eltis, Robert W. Woodruff Professor of History, will moderate. The departments of history and African American Studies and the James Weldon Johnson Institute are co-sponsors. Refreshments and a book signing will follow the program.

The talk is accompanied by an exhibition of earlier surveys of African American history drawn from the Carter G. Woodson Library in MARBL.
