Emory saves energy during holidays

Emory's institutional commitment to reduce energy use by 25 percent per square foot by 2015 has prompted Campus Services and the Office of Sustainability Initiatives to find creative ways to lower energy consumption on campus.

Over two, four-day periods this holiday season (Dec. 23-26 and Dec. 30 -Jan. 2), Emory will program the heating systems in select buildings to maintain a 50°F minimum set point, which will reduce energy consumption and costs, while protecting building contents.

View the list of buildings included in the holiday turndown.

For buildings not included on the list, occupants are encouraged to participate by turning thermostats to 68°F which allows the system to minimize heating without going into cooling mode. All building occupants are encouraged to turn off interior lights, computers and other office equipment before leaving for the holidays. View frequently asked questions (PDF) about the turndown.

In 2009, the holiday turndown effort saved Emory approximately $15,000 through reduced energy use.
