Planning a Teaching & Learning Center at Emory

Currently, UACT is working with Emory College and the professional schools to explore one recommendation from the Commission on Teaching’s report, to launch a teaching and learning center at Emory University. Over the course of the past two years, many conversations and needs-assessments have taken place to examine various arguments in favor of establishing a university-wide, versus school-specific, center.

UACT, and the Office of the Provost, are committed to providing comprehensive and integrated resources for Emory faculty and students. At the end of the fall 2004 semester, Provost Earl Lewis charged each dean with bringing faculty together to discuss the school-specific needs and concerns faculty may have regarding a teaching center. The results of these discussions are to be compiled in a comprehensive report for Provost Lewis’ purview, in order to begin the process of establishing such a center here at Emory. Likewise, UACT has focused its programming for academic years 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 to center on facilitating discussions regarding a teaching and learning center. Roundtable Luncheons for 2004-2005 consisted of conducting needs-assessments for center resources. The 2005-2006 Visiting Speaker Series will give Emory faculty, students, and staff an opportunity to listen to and learn from outside university administrators or center directors who can share their experience and perspective on the process of creating and administering a university teaching center.
