Faculty

Emory's first faculty members were Methodist ministers. The university's diverse faculty now includes more than 3,000 full, associate and assistant professors working across nine schools:

  • 2,860 full-time faculty (2007-2008)
  • More than two out of five faculty holding tenure or tenure-track positions (2007-2008)
  • 277 tenured faculty holding named chairs, including 68 faculty holding university-level chairs (2007)

The university purposefully invests in its faculty through several initiatives:

  • Center for Faculty Development and Excellence, newly created by the Strategic Plan
  • Faculty Distinction Fund, which includes $35 million and a $10 million equipment supplement, to recruit and retain leading scholars
  • Creativity & Arts Initiative, which fosters collaboration and creativity across departments

The Distinguished Faculty Lecture Series is given by an academic selected by his or her peers. The Thomas Jefferson Award, one of several teaching awards, recognizes a faculty member or administrator who has provided significant service through personal activities, influence and leadership.
