Departments interested in inviting you as an Exchange Visitor (EV) are responsible for requesting form DS-2019, the Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor (J-1) Status. The department should initiate the process for all DS-2019s no less than three months before your anticipated start date.
You will be required to submit information and documentation in ISSS Link regarding your credentials, biographical information, immigration history, finances and objectives statement, dependent information, and health insurance coverage.
Please carefully review the J-1 submission checklist to ensure you gather all the necessary documentation.
Since all supporting documentation will now be stored electronically in ISSS Link, submission of original documentation is not necessary. All documentation must be submitted electronically. Original documents, however, must be available for inspection by the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs upon request.
Any documents in a foreign language must be accompanied by an English translation. The translator must certify the accuracy of the translation and his or her competency in the language to be translated and English.
You will receive an email from email@example.com with instructions for completing your portion of the J-1 request. Have the documents listed in the J-1 submission checklist for which you are responsible available for upload into ISSS Link.
Once you have completed your portion, your sponsoring department is responsible for completing the remainder of the request.
In general, all of your J-1 activities should take place at Emory. In rare cases, some of your activities might take place at a non-Emory site under the supervision of an Emory faculty member. In such cases, your department chair should send a letter to your ISSS advisor. More info >>
If you have any questions regarding the progress of your J-1 request, please contact your sponsoring department’s administrator. If your department is unable to answer your questions, then your sponsoring department may contact an ISSS scholar advisor to assess the situation and provide any appropriate advice.
