As an F-1 student, you are required to be enrolled in a full course load every semester. Enrollment for a reduced course load is only permitted under special circumstances. These include:
If you need to enroll in a reduced course load, you must obtain authorization from an international student advisor prior to withdrawing from a class or classes that would result in less that a full load.
To request a reduced course load for academic reasons (including final term):
Discuss your plans with an academic advisor or dean.
Log in to ISSS Link to complete the Reduced Course Load Authorization e-form, indicating contact information for the academic advisor or dean.
The form will be routed to the indicated academic advisor or dean, and, once authorization has been given by ISSS, you will be notified via email that your new form I-20 is ready to be signed and picked up. ISSS requires five business days for processing. You may reduce your course load after you have received the new form I-20 showing that the reduction has been authorized.
To request a reduced course load for medical reasons:
Obtain a letter from the licensed medical doctor, doctor of osteopathy, or licensed clinical psychologist treating the condition indicating what level of coursework you are able to carry during the current term. (This information will remain confidential and limited to the required immigration file in ISSS. It will not be shared with anyone outside ISSS.)
Make an appointment with your international student advisor to discuss the reduced course load.
