Federal regulations require students in F-1 immigration status to maintain full-time enrollment each fall and spring semester. Part-time enrollment is only permitted in certain circumstances, including:
Students who wish to enroll in a reduced course load must obtain authorization from an international student advisor prior to withdrawing from a class or classes.
Students who wish to request a reduced course load for academic reasons must:
Discuss plans with an academic advisor or dean.
Log in to ISSS Link to complete the Reduced Course Load Authorization e-form, indicating contact information for an academic advisor or dean and whether the request is for medical reasons.
The form will be routed to the indicated academic advisor or dean, and once authorization has been given by ISSS, students will be notified by their international student advisor via email that their new I-20 is ready to be signed and picked up. ISSS requires five business days for processing.
Students who wish to request a reduced course load for medical reasons must:
Obtain a letter from the licensed medical doctor, doctor of osteopathy, or licensed clinical psychologist treating the condition which provides information about the illness and his/her opinion on the effects of the medical condition on coursework. (This information will remain confidential and limited to the required immigration file in ISSS. It will not be shared with anyone outside ISSS.)
Make an appointment with the international student advisor to discuss the reduced course load.
