Planting,
reception wish Chaces well: JoAn and Bill Chace heave the first shovels
full of dirt onto an oak tree planted in their honor Aug. 29 on the Quadrangle
in front of Bowden Hall. As the Chaces prepare to take a year’s
sabbatical before returning to the English faculty in 2004–05, they
entertained well-wishers at an ice cream social. But before the reception,
a crowd watched as University Secretary Gary Hauk and Chief Environmental
Officer John Wegner spoke at the tree-planting, the latter sharing some
wisdom in honor of the Chaces. “The meaning of life,” Wegner
said, “is to plant trees under whose shade you do not expect to
