King's
quotes give keynote immediacy: Activist
and author Elaine Brown delivered Emory’s King Week keynote
speech to a standingroom-only crowd in Woodruff Library’s
Jones Room, Tuesday, Jan. 20. Brown deftly wove civilrights-era
quotes from King to back up her points on current issues ranging
from the war in Iraq to crises in health care for African Americans.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of King Week on campus, and
academic, artistic and worship activities to honor Martin Luther
King Jr. ran through Jan. 25. Photo by Kay Hinton. |

Scholarship
& Research: Social barriers hinder health care for black men: The
School of Medicine’s
David Malebranche led a qualitative study which examined the social
prejudices that act as barriers to health care for black men at risk
for HIV. Infection rates for this population in some U.S. cities
rival those of sub-Saharan Africa, according to the CDC. |
