Critically acclaimed poet and author Thomas Lynch, whose writings inspired the HBO series "Six Feet Under" and two public television documentaries, will read selections from his poetry and essays on Monday, April 11 at 7 p.m. at Candler School of Theology Room 252. Co-sponsored by Emory Creative Writing, the reading is free and open to the public, and will be followed by a book signing.

Lynch is a funeral director in Milford, Mich., and has published three collections of poetry, three books of essays, and a book of short stories. "The Undertaking," a collection of 12 essays, was a winner of an American Book Award and finalist for the National Book Award.

Lynch will take the stage with Emory’s Bandy Professor of Preaching Thomas G. Long at Candler School of Theology April 11-12 as part of a four-city lecture tour called “The Undertaking,” designed to return reverential ritual and metaphor to end-of-life practices. “The Undertaking” serves as Candler’s annual Whiteside Lectures sponsored by the school’s Office of Lifelong Learning.
