Finding center in the midst of illness

Meditation expert and Emory nursing professor Susan Bauer-Wu has spent her career at the bedsides of the seriously ill. When her research showed that mindfulness — being aware — practices can greatly benefit those with diseases like cancer, she realized that she was uniquely situated to bring the tools of mindfulness to people struggling with sickness.

Now Bauer-Wu brings simple, accessible mindfulness practices to the public with her new book, "Leaves Falling Gently: Living Fully with Serious and Life-Limiting Illness through Mindfulness, Compassion, and Connectedness" (New Harbinger, 2011).

The book explores how people of all faiths can decrease suffering by raising their awareness of each moment, their bodies, and their surroundings.

Listen to Susan Bauer-Wu talk about her new book and read from the chapter, "Listening and Looking: Inside and Outside:"
