Schwartz pipe organ a work of art itself: University Organist Timothy Albrecht has reason to smile as the Schwartz Center’s Emerson Concert Hall is outfitted with a pipe organ that promises to rival those of the finest European cathedrals. Hand-crafted by Minnesota organ builder Daniel Jaeckel, the 14-ton organ (dubbed Jaeckel’s “Opus 45”) features pipes as long as 27 feet and as short as a quarter-inch. The instrument will silently dominate Emerson Concert Hall during 2004–05; Jaeckel will tune the pipes next summer, and Albrecht will perform a recital in fall 2005. Photo by Jon Rou.

The Halle Institute for Global Learning is cosponsoring a visit to Atlanta by President Mikhail Saakashvili of Georgia on Aug. 6 and 7. Saakashvili will speak at an invitation-only dinner hosted by the Halle Institute and the Southern Center for International Studies on Aug. 6, but the Georgian president also will appear at public events at the Atlanta History Center on West Paces Ferry Road in Buckhead.
