Class of 2010 pumped up for life
At Emory’s 165th Commencement California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger pumped up the graduates with humor and heartfelt advice.

Oxford illuminates life’s path

Members of Oxford’s Class of 2010 gathered May 8 to receive their associate of arts degrees and heard from Commencement speaker Dennis Liotta, Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Chemistry.

Alumni ceremonies are largest ever
More participation meant record numbers at alumni events during Commencement Weekend and a scramble for candles at the Candlelight Crossover.

Keynote address: ‘Be hungry to make your mark’
In addition to his movies lines, Commencement speaker Arnold Schwarzenegger gave graduates the key principles that brought him success in a variety of careers.

Diploma ceremonies
Following the all-schools ceremony, Emory’s individual schools awarded diplomas, special honors and hosted speakers.

Jefferson Award: University citizen Byrd dedicated to Emory
This year’s Commencement ceremony was especially poignant for Rudolph P. Byrd who received the Thomas Jefferson Award.

Scholar/Teacher Award: Holifield says honor represents all teachers
E. Brooks Holifield says, “I see my reception of the award as a symbolic gesture that represents that company of dedicated teachers and scholars, and I feel, of course, deeply honored to have been this year’s symbolic representative.”

Cuttino Award: Stokes had winning link with mentor
Darrell Stokes, professor and director of undergraduate studies for biology, continues the mentoring and friendship he learned from his own mentor, George Cuttino, for whom this Commencement award is named.

McMullan Award: Seitz wins for engaged, exceptional scholarship
Graduate Scot Seitz is the 2010 winner of the Lucius Lamar McMullan Award, one of Emory’s highest student honors that also comes with $20,000 — no strings attached.

Brittain Award: Community building nets top honor for Kappus

Graduate and outgoing Student Government Association president Alex Kappus’ record of scholarship, leadership and service has netted him Emory’s highest student honor: The Marion Luther Brittain Award.

From Oxford, a direct line to Emory’s history
Commencement was uniquely historic for Hena Chun ’08Ox-’10C, the great-great granddaughter of Yun Ch’i-ho 1893C, a Korean who was Emory’s first international student. Chun is the first of Yun’s direct descendants to graduate from Emory.

Five awarded honorary degrees
A civil rights icon, a renowned health care expert, an award-winning writer and a former leader of the World Bank were recognized with honorary degrees during Emory's 165th commencement ceremony, in addition to keynote speaker Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger,
