Atlanta magazine’s December 2000 issue recently hit the streets, complete with the publication’s annual compiliation of the “Best Of” what its city has to offer, and several Emory individuals and groups—and greenspaces—garnered mention: Ha Jin, who is leaving Emory to join the faculty at Boston University, was named Best Wordsmith for his novel Waiting. The book earned Jin both the 1999 National Book Award and the 2000 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction; The Emory Chamber Music Society was named Best Chamber Music Group; Steve Murray, Theater Emory playwright-in-residence, was named Best Playwright. “[Murray’s] name alone sells tickets to his witty new plays around town,” the magazine wrote; President Jimmy Carter is featured, listing his personal preferences for what is Best about Atlanta, including the “Best New Atlanta Grandchild”: Carter’s 1-year-old grandson Hugo, son of former first daughter Amy Carter; And, last but not least, Lullwater Estate was named Best Place to Enjoy the Great Outdoors (Inside I-285) Editor’s note: It should be noted that Kendall Simpson, director of the Emory Concerts Division, sat on the 60-member judging panel.
