New policy guides outside volunteer activities

Emory University and Emory Healthcare have implemented new guidelines for faculty, staff and students volunteering their time for outside nonprofit organizations.

Read the policy: Faculty, Staff & Student External Volunteer Guidelines

"Emory gets many, many requests from worthwhile organizations and is unable to fulfill them all," says Cheryl Ritchie, director of insurance and loss control in Emory's Office of Quality & Risk.

The external volunteer guidelines, Ritchie notes, were developed to determine which organizations to support that are compatible with the missions of Emory and its various departments.

Employees can take requests to volunteer to the deans and department heads, who can use this policy as a guide, she adds.

The policy also illuminates when activities and situations would be covered by the employee's insurance.  And it contains forms for volunteers to use.
