International Scholar Check-In and Orientation

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) requires that all international scholars check in with Emory upon their arrival in the United States. ISSS is the office that will validate your arrival and participation in a valid program or position at Emory.

You are required to present yourself for check-in within seven days of your program's start date. Failure to report within this timeframe will result in automatic termination of your legal status.

Important notes

  1. When attending your check-in session, bring their passport/visa, I-94, DS-2019 (J-1 scholars) or I-797 (other scholars if applicable) with you.

  2. Bring all relevant paperwork for dependents with you in the United States.

  3. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late for your orientation, you won't be able to enter the session and will need to return on another date.

  4. Visitor parking near our office is limited. We encourage you to walk or take a shuttle. The E, M, and Loop shuttles stop in front of the North Decatur Building. The CCTMA and the Park-and-Ride shuttles stop on Burlington Road near our front entrance. Shuttle routes >>

  5. J-1 scholars need to supply proof of health insurance to ISSS. Learn more >>

  6. Please DO NOT attempt to apply for a Social Security number until you have attended a check-in session.

Information will be provided to you, upon check-in, on issues such as Social Security, drivers license, banking, and more.
