Latting named dean of admission
John F. Latting
John F. Latting has been appointed assistant vice provost for undergraduate enrollment and dean of admission at Emory where he will lead the University in attracting and retaining undergraduate students who have the highest quality of intellect, motivation and diversity.
Latting, currently the dean of undergraduate admissions at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., will transition to this new position over the next two months.

I'm confident we'll build on the clear strengths of Emory, and the impressive admissions results of years past, to extend the reach of the university around the nation and around the world."
Latting will be responsible for recruiting the freshman class for Emory College, including students who will eventually matriculate to Goizueta Business School and the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing. He also will provide leadership in coordinating undergraduate admission and financial aid.
Latting also is charged with successfully implementing Emory's strategic enrollment goals, playing a key role in advising senior leadership on enrollment issues and strategies.

"There is no question that our Office of Admission will thrive under his creative leadership and that our undergraduate schools will benefit greatly from his insight and experience as we continue to recruit excellent students to Emory."
Latting served as dean of undergraduate admissions at Johns Hopkins since 2007 and as JHU's director of undergraduate admissions 2001-07. As dean he managed the recruitment and selection of undergraduates into JHU's Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering at JHU, and directed the recruitment of international and transfer students into the undergraduate programs.
Under his leadership JHU increased the size of the freshmen applicant pool in nine consecutive years, improved student diversity and strengthened the academic preparation of the freshman class. He also led the office in implementing improved information technology, adopting a robust social media and e-recruiting process, engaging faculty in the admission process and establishing a strong communications strategy.
Prior to JHU, Latting was a member of the admissions team at Caltech from 1994 –01, first as assistant then associate director and finally as senior associate director in 1999. He also worked in admissions at Stanford University, where he focused on admission of both athletes and international students.
Latting earned a PhD in educational administration in1996 from the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, at Berkeley. He graduated from Stanford in 1987 with a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy and earned a master of arts degree from Berkeley in 1993.
Latting's wife, economic historian Caroline Fohlin, has been named a distinguished visiting professor in Emory's economics department. In her research, Fohlin investigates how financial markets, institutions and systems have developed around the world and how the organization of financial intermediaries influences their performance and potentially impinges on economic growth.
